THE DEBUT (2000) and short LOLA’S WAKE (2020) presented by Filipino American Association of Southern Ohio with a post-film discussion regarding challenges facing first and second-generation Filipino Americans (and many children of immigrant families), including pressures of cultural preservation and familial obligations. About the film: A young man struggles with his desire to study art when his family thinks he's headed for premedical studies. Conflicts between Filipino traditions and expectations vs. personal dreams in the contemporary world erupt at his sister's debut.
