How to Celebrate Respectfully
All AAPI Heritage events are open to the public. If you don’t share an AAPI Heritage, your support matters, and everyone should feel welcome to celebrate AAPI Heritage.
You might be wondering how to celebrate without appropriation (taking something for one's own use, typically without the owner's permission).
As you take part, here are some simple guidelines to celebrate respectfully:
A true celebration honors the ones being celebrated, so all events should be appropriate and respectful.
Refrain from the following:
Mocking, mimicking, laughing at, or making judgments about a culture’s food, customs, expressions, or dress
Stereotyping or making assumptions about a culture or AAPI individual
Instead you can:
Graciously receive what is shared with you
Observe and participate when invited
Embrace the celebration - keep showing up and supporting AAPI individuals
Center the experiences of AAPI individuals when sharing stories
Ask questions to better understand the value of AAPI Heritage
If you’re not sure if something you’d like to do, say, or share would be considered disrespectful or appropriation, simply ask someone from that culture. Some people may feel uncomfortable telling you “no,” so if the person seems uncomfortable with your request, be mindful and take their hesitation as a “no” or “not yet.”
Enjoy delicious cuisine, grab the karaoke mic, and share in the laughter.
Thanks for celebrating AAPI Heritage Month! #aapicincy
