Woo Chong Yung (1899-1989) was an accomplished painter, calligrapher, and poet from Shanghai. In 1966, Woo emigrated to Columbus, Ohio right before the Cultural Revolution. The great majority of his lifetime works were collected exclusively in the Cincinnati Art Museum and the Otterbein University Museum. In this lecture, Hou-mei Sung will explore Woo’s unique position in Chinese painting history and how his emigrating from Shanghai to Ohio and becoming an American utterly transformed and reshaped both his life and painting.
